One of the things that continues to baffle the world (the rest of the world) about Eritreans, is the fact that there are people who continue to support the regime that is so obviously causing untold misery to their own people. My own fascination with ‘supporters’  of pfdj (the goons as I have come to know them) is only ever paralleled by my fascination of DIA the tyrant that they worship. However from the perspectives of our long-term wellbeing as a nation, understanding the goons is more crucial than understanding DIA. Here is why….

Vanessa was only 16 when she started campaigning for Seyoum Tsehaye. The justice seekers need to define their priorities and engage in campaign activities. I hope the management committee of the USA “Baito” in Washington and in other places in Europe, Canada, and Australia, draw an action plan (Road map) that guides their activism. Once they organises in such way it makes easier to coordinate global demonstration on specific serious issues. It is fundamentally crucial that the Yeakel movement puts the pains and suffering of the people at the centre of the advocacy campaign. For Serious work the association must be institutionalized. Members must pay small membership fees. There must be an office and full or part time paid workers.

Eritrea is way back in the ‘wilderness’ and is now progressing towards an existential threat. It has gradually and, finally, dawned on Eritreans that they had a hand in the making of what Eritrea has become in this tragic turn of its internal affairs that took decades to figure out. Read More ...

Do our young activists wish simply to condemn the oppression and protest against the system like the previous generation of activists?  Or, do they wish to end the oppression, and replace it peacefully with a system of greater freedom, democracy, and justice? Many old activists assumed that if they denounced the oppression strongly enough, and protested long enough, the desired change would somehow be realized. That assumption was not entirely correct. They have managed to bring the problems Eritrea is experiencing to the attention of the international community, which was advantageous in many aspects of the struggle, but they failed short in achieving the desired outcome.  Read More ...

If durable peace is the real objective, Abiy and Ethiopia cannot afford to ignore the pain of the Eritrean people, because they will have to face a betrayed and wounded population after Isaias is gone. Those wounds will heal too but why postpone progress by repeating bad history? Why invite a champion of poverty who delights in demolishing lives, homes and businesses in Eritrea, to a sugar factory opening ceremony in Ethiopia? Why all this at the expense of border demarcation? Are Ethiopians willing to accept a psychopath as their new emperor prolonging the bad memories of our past? Ethiopians and Eritreans are one people, said in Amharic the foreign minister and the president of the State of Eritrea to the Ethiopian people during their visit of Addis Ababa, in July, 2018. Isaias was feted as a hero and received traditional Ethiopian warrior outfits and a live camel: the emblem of his state. He also attended with fanfare the opening of the old Eritrean embassy. The irony is that these figures, who are the elite of the war for separation from Ethiopia, banned for years Amharic songs from bars and other recreation centers in Eritrea, and were tirelessly working to either diminish or erase the cultural and civilization legacy of not only Axum, Zagwe, but anything that followed it. When such a project seems daunting and impossible, a revisionist narrative of a civilization that predates Axum, had lately been in vogue.
