One can thus see that the process of building an institution of forced conscription and slavery started long before the “border war” with Ethiopia, with the quiet implementation of the 1995 decree. The new Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, has broken the state of “frozen” relations in this apparently intractable dispute by persuading his government to accept the Boundary Commission’s decisions in full. On June 5, 2018, Ethiopia’s governing coalition, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPDRF) released a statement confirming that it would “fully accept and implement” a peace deal with Eritrea that commits the two countries to accepting the findings of the Commission. It also called on the Eritrean government to “take the same stand without any prerequisite and accept our call to bring back the long-lost peace of the two brother nations”. It also has to be remembered that Eritrea long ago publicly accepted the Commission’s findings. Now the way is open for full peaceful relations to be established, and visits by Ethiopian diplomatic delegations to Eritrea are in process to establish peace in all areas. Consequently, Ethiopia is expected to withdraw its occupying troops from Badme and other territories awarded to Eritrea, ending the militarization of the border. Both the government of Ethiopia and Eritrea (in the person of Isaias Afwerki ONLY) had expressed their desire for this as early as 1993. Shortly after Eritrea’s referendum on independence was held, Reuters reported (on May 3, 1993) that then-President Meles Zenawi “did not rule out confederation, a view shared by Eritrean leader Isayas Afewerki.” The second thing to say about this is that, on the merits, this may very well be the best arrangement for Eritreans and Ethiopians, but that’s hardly the point. The third thing to say about it, which will be the focus of this article, is that the author’s objection to it is that it is being done, at least from the perspective of Eritreans, very secretly and without consulting the people. It appears to be the execution of the long-term dream of President Isaias Afwerki, now that all who may oppose him are dead or disappeared or exiled. The fourth thing to say about it, which we won’t spend a lot of time on, is that confederation arrangements are almost always a stop on the path to fuller integration (federation, union) or separation following dissolution. To build peace within, this group should also strive to help us escape the “opposition”, “pro-regime”, religious and regional prisons we have locked ourselves into. We need to learn and use a new language that is forward looking. We need a new and softer tone that is inclusive, to help save Eritrea from its death spiral. “Mass enslavement” of its people – as The Economist of August 4th called it – is what Eritrea is known for today. Given the new worrying developments, words like “opposition” or “pro-regime” should have no meaning or place in our dialog anymore. You are setting an example of a democratic leader, by calling for national reconciliation, unity, love and accepting responsibility of the rampant corruption, and other human rights crimes perpetrated by the government, and releasing political prisoners by the thousands. You invited the Ethiopian opposition political organizations in the Diaspora to return home and participate in electoral processes to compete with EPRDF in a peaceful manner. The court said the requirement for Eritreans to perform national service for an unforeseeable amount of time “places an excessive burden on citizens”. Sadly, when it comes to the Eritrean people, the “demari” is not looking much better than Ginbot7. It is one thing to offer Isaias the respect diplomacy demands but quite another to act like a smitten teenager idolizing one who personifies the exact opposite values he (Abiy) himself claims to stand for (http://asmarino.com/articles/articles-video/5105-2018-07-15-17-24-44). His enthusiastic embrace of a documented killer is what makes Abiy intriguing at this point. Such callous display of idolatry can only diminish Abiy’s own stature and eventually tarnish his brand. If his brand is truly values-driven, he cannot continue to be tone deaf to the suffering of the Eritrean people. The problem with populists is that they look good until they face a critical moment of truth. Yes, he is exciting and I am willing to give him multiple benefits of the doubt. But he has clearly failed his first test regarding the Eritrea people. After all, as Ethiopia’s former security officer, PM Abiy is fully aware that Isaias is a murderer and Eritrea is nothing more than a slave colony.  It is admirable that he admitted his government committed terrorist acts on the Ethiopian people. Now, let’s draw a comparison between the Trojan horse story and the current Ethio-Eritrean situation. Before we start comparing however, I would like to make it clear for the readers that my intentions are not to accuse the Abiy government of deceit, advocate against peace or downplay the Abiymenia but to reflect on the latest relationship between the Eritrean and Ethiopian governments, how so many Eritreans and Ethiopians may be getting wrong impressions of the situation and the potential consequences of the approach taken for peace. Currently, we have no clear answers as to why PM Abiy Ahmed would consider President Isaias of Eritrea as a trusted partner for peace. Obviously, the gross human rights violations in Eritrea can’t be PM Abiy’s primary concern. However, if sustainable peace and economic integration between the peoples of Eritrea and Ethiopia is what he is seeking for then before poking a hornet's nest with a stick he needs to have the vision to see beyond a temporary gain and foresee what an Abiy-Isaias relationship will most likely turn out to be. As one adage rightfully states, all roads lead to Rome and with Isaias still in the game, any type of peace agreement the dictator is a part of may take a wrong turn and eventually lead to further bloodshed.
